Why This Matters
This article in The Week captures the intersection of clinical excellence and social impact that defines the Bhograj family. Dr. Abhijit Bhograj's work at the free clinic — screening thousands for diabetes and thyroid disorders in underserved rural communities — is the foundation of his belief that healthcare must be accessible, data-driven, and patient-first.
The Story
Every Sunday for over five decades, the Bhanuvara Grama Chikitsalaya ("Sunday Village Clinic") opens its doors in Byadarahalli village, 30 kilometres from Bengaluru. Founded in 1973 by Padma Shri Dr. B. Ramana Rao — a cardiologist who was the personal physician to legendary actor Dr. Rajkumar — the clinic now sees 700 to 1,200 patients each week, entirely free of charge.
Dr. Abhijit Bhograj, Dr. Ramana Rao's son and a DM Endocrinologist, screens patients for diabetes and thyroid disorders at the clinic. He has observed first-hand how diabetes increasingly affects rural India — not due to affluence, but because of dietary shifts toward refined foods and sedentary lifestyles reaching even the most remote communities.
"Diabetes is no longer just a disease of the wealthy. Dietary changes and refined food consumption mean rural populations are now equally affected — and they have far less access to specialist care."
— Dr. Abhijit Bhograj, EndocrinologistThe clinic is a true family operation. Dr. Abhijit's wife Jahnavi, a clinical dietician, develops gradual dietary improvement programmes for patients — never forcing immediate diet changes, but guiding sustainable transitions. His brother Dr. Charit Bhograj, an interventional cardiologist, handles cardiac cases. Sister-in-law Dr. Santini addresses occupation-related skin conditions common among farm workers.
Key Learnings
Rural Diabetes is Rising Fast
Diabetes is no longer an urban disease. Dietary shifts and refined food consumption are driving an epidemic in rural India — where specialist access is almost non-existent.
Consistency Compounds
51 years of showing up every Sunday — no breaks, no excuses. The clinic has treated 18 lakh patients because it became a trusted institution through unwavering consistency.
Family as Healthcare Unit
Cardiologist, endocrinologist, dietician, dermatologist — the Bhograj family functions as a multi-specialty team, demonstrating that integrated care starts with culture, not infrastructure.
